Sailing on OPBs (other peoples boats) - It sure is great to have friends with sailboats

Maranatha - Ranger 33 - Skipper Joel
I have crewed several times for Joel 2011-2014.
Here is a recent photo, slow race but good crew mates and sunshine!

Sonrisa - Cascade 36 - Capt. Mary and I have known each other for quite a few years through work and mutual friends, but hadn’t gone sailing together until the spring of 2009.  She had gone north to Alaska in 2007, the year I went south to Mexico.   Since then we have been comparing notes, and talking about all the possibilities.  Then in early 2011 I was contacted by a woman who was looking for crew from BC to Hawaii in June 2011.  I couldn't go because of the time, but I referred her to Mary.  Mary has plans for this trip now and I am so JEALOUS.  I hope to deliver Mary to Alice for their trip and meet Alice.  I have sailed on Sonrisa a few times over the last couple years, one cold trip from Boston Harbor (it was snowing when we were taking the headsail down after we got to her new berth at Martin Marina), and one SSSS cruise in late January 2011.  Sonrisa is a very ‘cruising’ comfortable boat also.  Is there a trip to the south pacific in the works here, maybe.........  Maybe Mexico first…..

Argos - Island Packet 31 - MaryAnn bought her boat in mid-March 2011. She closed the deal right before the Spring Boating Symposium in Port Townsend that she, Mary, and I had signed up for.  So Mary and MaryAnn brought the boat from Bellingham to Port Townsend that Friday, where I was fortunate enough to get a berth on her new boat for the weekend for the Spring Boating Symposium.  (I drove up Friday afternoon)  She is a beautiful boat, and was very comfortable for us that weekend. I hope to someday sail on her also.

Liberte - Newport 30 - Debra bought Liberte, her first sailboat, last summer also.  She moors it in Olympia but lives in Portland.  I saw her advertisement in the SSSS newsletter in the fall of 2010 and sent her an email.  We fast became friends.  I mean after all, it isn’t just anyone who asks you for a first boating outing, to the pumpout station……  During the winter I offered to check on her boat, if only I had a key to the marina's gates ..........(Ah, free run of the marine now to look at boats for me…..)  We had plans to go sailing several times last fall, but for one reason or another never made it.  Our second try ended with transmission trouble, i.e., it was having a hard time going into forward and besides there wasn’t much wind out.  When Debra heard the estimate for getting it fixed, her eyes got big and I said “Welcome to boat ownership”.  Our maiden sailing voyage finally happened on April 9th, 2011.  We had a glorious sail and I look forward to many more on Liberte with Debra.

Gratitude - Catalina 30 - Terri bought Gratitude, her first sailboat, last summer and lives aboard in Olympia. We have yet to go sailing, but we did have one exciting and freezing adventure in late February 2011 (there was ice in the marina so when I say it, I mean FREEZING). She wanted crew for the trip to Seattle to have her boat hauled out and some work done.  We took the boat to Blake Island on Saturday for the night and then over to Shilshole Marina the next morning...We motored the entire way, never hoisted the sails because the lines on the deck were FROZEN.  The trip from Blake Island to Shilshole was a bit chilly and rather windy too, but nothing that couldn’t be handled.  Despite the cold it was a good trip and I am looking forward to sailing with Terri sometime in the near future.

Rushwind - Fast Passage 39 – Ken is a great skipper (maybe that’s because he let’s me drive too) and she sails a lot like Machrihanish did, complete with solar panels…..  I’ve sailed on Rushwind in three races in the winter of 2010/2011. The last race was Toliva Shoals Race in mid-February 2011 and we had a great race.  We did 45 nm in 7.5 hours with sunshine the whole time.  I only got green water in the face twice during the race, … yup, it surprised me too!
In February 2014 on Rushwind we finished a 30+ nm race in a snowstorm (very unusual).

Mariah - Naja 30 - John has owned Mariah for a few years now and I just recently sailed on her.  We sailed in the Race to the Straits race in early May 2011; it’s a two day race from Shilshole Bay, Seattle to Port Townsend and back (60+ nm). We did the first day sail in 6 hours (30+ nm) with a S/SW wind and the return trip the next day was also a downwind sail with the wind shifting to the N, but it was lighter so the sail was 9 hours.  All in all a great weekend sailing in Puget Sound. John calls the design a Thunderbird on steroids, course you have to know what a Thunderbird looks like, hard chines, some square lines.  Anyway, she is a unique boat and certainly sails well.

Khamsin - Morgan 38 - Only one short sail on Khamsin so far with Erik, and we had a great afternoon/evening sail with winds and some sun.  It was still a little cool, but a great way to end the week.  He's only had her since February this year, so still getting to know her.
Another TGIF evening/happy hour sail on Khamsin with great company, good food, and lots of laughs; but very little wind.  Perfect evening for trying the spinnaker and after a few untangles, she was flying and moving us along.
Another TGIF happy hour sail in May was a great successwith Rob & Micki, Jayne & Glen, Erik and I; good food and LOTS of laughs.

Jazz - #2 Star (22 foot) - John T. skipper - a gorgeous wooden Star that John has spent a lot of time getting to shine. I sailed in the Spring Regatta with him and a good time in light winds.

Mako - #25 Star - Susan W. skipper - Susan and I had our first sail together on May 18th. We had a wonderful sail in sunshine and light winds.  I look forward to many more sails with Susan.
#31 Star - I chartered #31 for the 2011 season, and am enjoying getting out weekly (although not in the races) on Mondays usually.  Here is a photo of the Star sails and Alison (June 24th).
Vintage - A Ranger 33 owned by Myra (& Joe too);  I have been crewing for the Wednesday evening summer series races.
